Business Process Challenges

A leading third-party logistics company operating across 15 distribution centers and managing more than 5 million shipments annually needed to modernize its logistics operations. Shipment information was distributed across transportation management systems, warehouse management systems, GPS tracking, ERP systems, and carrier portals, making real-time visibility difficult.

The organization faced limited visibility into shipment status, fleet movement, delivery performance, shipment exceptions, and operational bottlenecks. Traffic, weather, and operational disruptions also contributed to delayed deliveries, while disconnected systems made it difficult to coordinate warehouse, transportation, and ERP operations.

Manual reporting further slowed operational decision-making, and the organization lacked predictive analytics for delivery delays and route risks. A centralized solution was needed to provide real-time shipment visibility, improve fleet utilization, automate alerts, and enable proactive, data-driven logistics decisions.

Our Strategic Approach

Softree Technology designed a centralized Logistics Control Tower and Shipment Visibility Platform using Microsoft's data, analytics, automation, and AI capabilities. The architecture consolidated data from TMS, WMS, ERP, GPS tracking, carrier APIs, fleet systems, IoT devices, and Excel reports through Microsoft Fabric, followed by centralized operational data management in Microsoft Dataverse.

The implementation progressed through six phases. Microsoft Fabric was used to integrate and unify shipment, fleet, warehouse, and transportation data. Dataverse provided centralized logistics data structures covering shipments, vehicles, drivers, warehouses, customers, routes, GPS locations, carriers, and logistics KPIs. Power BI delivered executive dashboards for shipment tracking, fleet performance, route analytics, carrier scorecards, and delivery KPIs.

A Power Apps operations portal enabled logistics coordinators and dispatch teams to manage shipments, routes, fleet activity, warehouse coordination, proof of delivery, and exceptions. Power Automate automated shipment delay alerts, delivery notifications, route deviation alerts, proof-of-delivery confirmations, escalation workflows, and Microsoft Teams notifications.

The solution also incorporated AI Builder, Azure Machine Learning, and Copilot Studio to predict shipment delays, identify high-risk routes, forecast delivery performance, and provide conversational logistics insights and operational recommendations.
